Overview
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002 and is engaged in effective teaching-learning, basic research and technology-based training and service to society. It offers a 4-year B.E. in Biotechnology (intake 30) and is supported by well-equipped independent laboratories, classrooms, a seminar hall and library. The department has been recognised as an R&D (Ph.D.) Research Centre by VTU Belagavi since 2011, with seven faculty holding Ph.D. degrees and active research in food processing, biofuels technology, bioremediation, fermentation technology and molecular biology. It hosts a Bioenergy Research, Information and Demonstration Centre (BRIDC) in association with KSBDB, GoK and a Food Testing Laboratory supported by KITS, Government of Karnataka, and partners with industry to provide students opportunities for internships and projects.

The Department of Biotechnology was established at Basaveshwar Engineering College in 2002, focusing on impactful teaching, research, and community service. The Department offers various programs including UG, PG Diploma, PG, and Ph.D., and has been recognized as an R&D center by VTU Belagavi since 2011. The field of biotechnology stands at the intersection of engineering and technological advancement, encompassing diverse domains such as biopharmaceutical development, industrial applications, and environmental solutions. Central to this discipline is the application of genetic technologies across animal and plant biotechnology, as well as innovations in cell and tissue engineering. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical role of biotechnology, with bio-pharmaceutical companies racing to develop vaccines and therapeutics, illuminating the industry's impact on public health. As of 2023, India emerges as a significant player in the global biotechnology landscape, ranking among the top twelve destinations for biotech innovation and holding the position as the largest biotechnology hub in the Asia Pacific region. The Indian biotechnology sector is valued at over USD 92 billion, with the bio-pharmaceutical industry leading in biosimilars, having the highest number approved in the domestic market. Moreover, the global bio-pharmaceutical market is projected to see remarkable growth, expanding from USD 274.10 billion in 2020 to an anticipated USD 703.28 billion by 2027, indicating a growing recognition of biotechnology's pivotal role in addressing contemporary challenges in healthcare and the environment.
